Un/Contained

Conceptual Framework
This body of work examines the dynamic interplay between containment and emergence. It references the historical framework of Abstract Expressionism, which positioned the artist as its central subject. Abstract Expressionism is associated with a pursuit of inner truth, positing that the authenticity of an artwork is directly linked to its reflection of the artist's self; consequently, greater authenticity imparts greater artistic power. Self-expression becomes a form of self-portraiture within this context.
The series consists of self-portraits that grapple with the inherent limitations of individual identity. The notion of an entirely unconditioned free self is challenged, recognizing that the self is continually shaped by and in dialogue with the boundaries that seek to define it. These boundaries provide form to self-expression. Nonetheless, no boundary is ever absolute. Regardless of constraints, the self inevitably finds ways to disrupt containment.
"Un-Contained" is not solely concerned with either containment or liberation; the intentional capitalization of "C" reflects this nuance. The work gives voice to the ongoing tension we experience—contraction between being Contained and Uncontained.
Artistic Approach
A dense core of layered color—gestural, fluid, and emotionally charged—is framed by torn white borders that evoke both rupture and protection. The white borders in each piece differ. They are created as a combination of diverse shapes, first starting as torn papers layered above as collages. Then I remove the papers and paint over it with acrylic latex paint that hides the brush stroke. This technique presents borders not as fixed lines but as dynamic thresholds.
